The Fishermen's Cottages, Staithes
. Free wifi is available in all cottages. We will mail you the password when your booking is confirmed. Parking is free and right outside Old Jack's. and Fisherman's Cottage. Owners of large cars may prefer to park down on the staith past the lifeboat shed. We provide one parking permit for those cottages that allows either option. If you bring a second car there’s an unattended pay-for car park at the top of Cowbar Bank, also a pay-for car park (with CCTV) costing £49 per week at the top of the hill on the other side of the village. Short breaks are available at all times at both Old Jack's Cottage and Fisherman's Cottage. Old Jack's and Fisherman's Cottage have electric radiators and heaters throughout, both have open fires in the sitting rooms. We don’t supply logs or coal, the Co-op at the top of Staithes, Hinderwell Garage two miles south of the village sell both along with firelighters and kindling. Bedlinen, towels, parking, wi-fi, and electricity are all included in the booking fee. There are three pubs in the Staithes – The George and The Cod & Lobster are just over the footbridge, the Captain Cook at the top of Staithes is renowned for its fine ales. All the above serve meals all years round, there are two cafes open during the day in Staithes, a bistro open lunchtime to 9pm, and a restaurant. There are plenty of good pubs and restaurants serving food in villages nearby – always happy to recommend our favourites.
The Co-op general store in Whitby Road at the top of Staithes village opens daily until 10pm. There are two large supermarkets in Whitby – the Co-op by the railway station in the centre of town, also a Sainsburys Superstore on the road out of Whitby, heading south (YO22 4NL.) And there’s a large Asda in Skelton (TS12 2ZL). We'll send you directions on how to get there when you book, postcode for all three cottages in TS13 5BZ. If you're coming by train, the nearest mainline station is Saltburn from where you can book a taxi. Buses run along the coast from Middlesbrough to Whitby, stopping at Staithes, every hour (X56). There are enough food outlets to be self-sufficient in Staithes without leaving the village. Smoking is strictly forbidden inside the cottages, however there are benches outside the door of each cottage on the terrace where you are free to smoke. Pets are very welcome at both Old Jack’s Cottage and Fisherman’s Cottage. Cottages are available from 3pm on day of arrival and must be vacated by 10am on day of departure. Each holiday cottage has a file of ’what’s on’ information for North Yorkshire. Heading south along the coast for two miles, you reach Port Mulgrave, the site of an old iron works and fossil heaven. Another two miles south is the beautifully curving Runswick Bay – great for swimming and walks. The sandy beach of Sandsend stretches three miles along the coast to the Victorian market town of Whitby, most famous for being the place where Captain Cook learned his seafaring skills and for its jet industry. Further south is Scarborough and Robin Hood’s Bay. Ask and we’ll share our favourite walk ideas with you. Heading north up the coast from Staithes, you reach Boulby Cliff and the old mining village of Skinningrove with an interesting look back into the early days of the pits at the Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum. The delightful Victorian seaside town of Saltburn is a few miles further on. Staithes is a great base from which to explore the North York Moors – amazing scenery, fabulous walks and the village of Goathland, otherwise known as Aidensfield from the ITV drama Heartbeat. Running from Grosmont on the moors to the market town of Pickering (where Francis Hodgson Burnett set his children’s book The Secret Garden) is the NYM steam railway which boasts olde worlde stations, lovingly restored locomotives, theme days and a dining train.
Oscar-winner Peter O'Toole fell in love with Staithes after filming The Pied Piper here in 1989 and became a regular visitor.
